Local representative is lauded for work in foster care

State Rep. Dave Hickernell (R-Dauphin/Lancaster) was named “Legislator of the Year" by the Pennsylvania State Foster Parent Association (PSFPA).  The award was presented during a ceremony at the State Capitol.

“Representative Hickernell has shown outstanding leadership in providing resource families with the tools to raise foster children to the best of their abilities," said Garry Krentz, president of the PSFPA.   “He has a genuine concern, not only for making sure the families have the ability to provide the best care they can but also for working on legislation that will provide the children themselves with opportunities for success."

In 2005, Hickernell authored House Bill 1579, which was signed into law that year.  The Resource Family Care Act gave foster parents more input into the life decisions made on behalf of the children in their care, and more clearly defined the responsibilities of social service agencies to foster families.

“I am honored to be chosen by PSFPA," said Hickernell.  “Garry came to my office a few years ago with issues concerning foster parenting, and we have been able to create a better environment for foster children and their families."

PSFPA was founded in 1974.  The organization was originally designed to recruit new foster families and provide support to existing foster parents through networking and training.

PSFPA has more than 600 family members and more than 170 agency members.

Hickernell is a member of the House Committee on Children and Youth.
